Burn mapping across Australia with the Landsat Data Cube

Many organisations require information on burn history and fire risk. Fire authorities need information on past burn extent and severity as well as fire risk. Insurers, the Clean Energy Regulator and others need to assess the risk posed by bushfires to assets and investments. Continuous mapping of burnt area will also help to inform and attribute land cover change mapping carried out by government agencies.
There are currently well-developed automated systems for rangeland burn extent mapping, but there is no routine mapping of burn severity in forests, and therefore a fire history is often also not available.
In close collaboration with Geoscience Australia, we are developing methods to develop a full continental fire history for Australia by processing the enormous volume of Landsat imagery in their Digital Earth Australia data cube.
